4 Common Types of Brain Injuries in Auto Accidents

July 12, 2024
by Ted B Lyon & Associates

Car accidents, truck wrecks and motorcycle accidents can lead to serious, debilitating injuries. Brain injuries are among the most potentially life-altering results of a vehicle crash.

Brain injuries range from mild concussions to traumatic brain injury (TBI). As Texas motor vehicle accident attorneys, we’ve represented clients whose lives were altered by brain injuries of all kinds. We understand that each brain injury is unique and requires different diagnoses and treatments.

In this article, our Dallas lawyers outline some of the most common types of brain injuries people suffer in auto wrecks.

1. Subdural Hematoma

“Subdural hematoma” is the term used to describe blood collecting under the dura mater, which is the outermost membrane surrounding and protecting your brain.

The blood comes from a torn blood vessel. Such tears can occur due to sudden stops or changes in speed, like those you experience in a vehicle crash, even if you don’t hit your head. They can appear right away or develop over weeks or months. Symptoms include headaches, slurred speech, nausea, dizziness and disorientation. Subdural hematomas can be fatal.

2. Concussion

Concussions are brain injuries resulting from a blow to the head or another type of impact that causes your head to move forcefully (whiplash). You do not have to be knocked out to suffer a concussion; in fact, most people who get a concussion never lose consciousness.

Auto accidents are a leading cause of concussions. Symptoms can include headaches, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, sensitivity to light or noise, and more.

3. Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)

Diffuse axonal injury is the tearing of nerve fibers (axons) which occurs when the brain rotates inside the skull. DAI can be mild and present itself much like a concussion. It can also be severe, leaving the victim in a vegetative state. In some cases, it’s fatal.

According to the National Library of Medicine, auto accidents are the leading cause of diffuse axonal injuries.

4. Cerebral Contusion

Cerebral contusions are bruises or areas of bleeding on the brain’s surface, usually under the frontal or temporal lobes. They occur when the brain impacts the skull. They often occur along with hematomas.

Diagnosing Brain Injuries

Closed head injuries, like those described here, are most accurately diagnosed with CT brain scans. Patients suffering from these injuries often need advanced life support.

Compensation for Victims of Brain Injuries

After a crash, a Texas personal injury attorney may be able to help victims recover medical expenses, lost wages and compensation for loss of earning capacity. Additional compensation could be available for pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and loss of consortium.
