In 2017 (the most recent data available), 5,172 motorcyclists were killed on the U.S. roads, according the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That means motorcycle deaths accounted for nearly 14 percent of the 37,133 motor vehicle fatalities in America in 2017. And, according to the NHTSA, motorcyclists are 27 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash.
That is why May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month. During this month, as the summer riding season gears up, everyone should drive with heightened awareness. The month also serves to remind motorcycle drivers and riders to drive safely and wear appropriate clothing and protection.
Motorcycle safety practices are crucial everywhere, and certainly in a state like Texas. Why? Because according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), there are nearly 387,000 registered motorcycles in Texas. That’s the fourth most of any state (only California, Florida and Pennsylvania have more).
