Icy road conditions are relatively uncommon here in Texas, so driving during winter weather can be especially treacherous. Even those who exercise extreme care can still find themselves in an accident. Sadly, icy roads appear to be a factor in a horrific car crash that killed a popular high school student in Justin recently. Her friend sustained serious injuries. In the aftermath of the tragedy, classmates, teachers and the community have rallied to show their support for the deceased girl, her family and the injured teen.
The collision occurred close to the high school that the 16-year-old girls attended. According to reports, they were struck by a pickup that hit a slippery patch on the road. The truck lost control, entered the center lane and smashed into the girls’ vehicle.
Reports do not indicate what type of injuries the decedent sustained in the crash. The survivor suffered head trauma and required surgery to alleviate pressure on her brain. She reportedly also suffered a facial injury.
As family, friends, teachers and neighbors grieve the loss of this teenage girl, her friend is likely looking at a lengthy period of recovery. If the pickup truck driver is found to be negligent in any way, it may be possible for the victim’s family and the survivor to file civil actions. In Texas, they may be awarded compensation for financial losses and other damages resulting from the car crash if there is evidence that negligence was a factor. While filing such a claim will never ease the pain of this tragedy, it may offer some closure as the injured parties try to move on.
