Texas Roadway Deaths Decrease but Still Lead the Nation

Data from state and federal traffic agencies shows that fewer people died on Texas roads in 2023 than the year before. While that’s good news, the bad news is we’re still the deadliest state to drive in.

In April 2024, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) released its final Crash Facts for 2023. There were 4,283 traffic fatalities for the year, a decrease of 2.8%. The report includes some additional sobering statistics:

  • A person was killed in a crash every 2 hours and 3 minutes.
  • A person was injured in a crash every 2 minutes and 6 seconds.
  • A reportable crash occurred every 56 seconds.
  • The last day without a traffic fatality was November 7, 2000.
  • 18,752 people suffered a serious, non-fatal injury in a crash.

The TxDOT data highlights the scenarios that led to the most traffic deaths in 2023:

Despite Fewer Deaths, Texas Roads Are Still the Most Dangerous

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) compiles nationwide data on traffic accidents. Their most recent data shows that Texas still had the deadliest roads in 2023. Texas and California were the only states with more than 4,000 traffic fatalities. Florida had nearly 3,500. No other state had more than 1,700.
