Car and truck accidents continue to impact thousands of individuals and families every year, often resulting in serious injuries, emotional hardship, and lasting financial consequences. While not every collision can be avoided, many crashes are preventable through safer driving habits, increased roadway awareness, and a shared commitment to responsible decision-making behind the wheel.
At Ted Lyon Law, we have seen firsthand the devastating effects that preventable traffic accidents can have on victims and their loved ones. The 2027 Driven to Safety Scholarship was created to encourage students to think critically about the causes of preventable crashes and the steps individuals and communities can take to make our roads safer.
We invite applicants to share their perspectives on driving safety, identify ways to reduce traffic accidents, and reflect on how education, awareness, and personal responsibility can help protect everyone who uses our roadways. Through this scholarship, we hope to support students who are passionate about promoting safer driving practices and creating lasting, positive change in their communities.

Eligibility
- The scholarship is open to any current high school senior, vocational student, college student or graduate student who is a legal resident of the United States residing in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia and who is enrolled in a vocational program or two to four year post-secondary institution.
- Employees of Ted Lyon Law, their immediate families (parent, child, sibling, and spouse), and persons living in the same households of such individuals (whether related or not), are not eligible to participate in the competition.
- Candidates for this scholarship should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in good overall academic standing.

- The candidate must submit a 750-1,000 word essay response to the prompt: Car and truck accidents affect thousands of individuals and families each year, many of which could be prevented through safer driving habits and greater roadway awareness. Discuss what you believe are the leading causes of preventable traffic accidents and share ideas for how drivers and communities can work together to promote safer roads. You may also include personal experiences or observations that have shaped your perspective on driving safety.
- Please note that all essays will be checked for AI writing. If AI writing is deemed present in the essay, the application will be denied.
- The candidate must submit a professional resumé that lists their experience, both professional and academic.
- The candidate must submit a transcript from their current school. First-year college students, graduate students, or individuals who have recently transferred schools may submit an unofficial transcript from their current school, as well as the most recent official transcript from their prior school. High school students can submit proof of acceptance to their college or university.
- Preference will be given to students either from or attending secondary school in Texas.
The recipient of the Driven to Safety Scholarship will be chosen during the month following the scholarship deadline.
