Ted Lyon Inspires 2025 Graduates at East Texas A&M University Commencement

Commerce, Texas – Renowned Texas personal injury lawyer and former State Senator Ted Lyon delivered an unforgettable keynote address at the East Texas A&M University 2025 Graduate Commencement Ceremony. Speaking from the heart, Lyon shared stories of grit, purpose, and long-term planning—emphasizing the power of resilience and service to others.

A Voice of Experience

From serving as a police officer while pursuing his law degree to arguing high-stakes cases across the country, Lyon’s journey is one marked by determination. During his address, he reminded graduates that true success is not dictated by prestige, but by purpose-driven action. “Don’t think for a second that you can’t accomplish great things just because you didn’t graduate from Harvard or Yale,” Lyon said. “Because you can—and you will.”

A Legacy of Leadership and Law

As one of the top personal injury attorneys in Texas, Ted Lyon has handled over 150 jury trials, earning accolades such as Texas Super Lawyer and recognition from the American Trial Lawyers Association. His courtroom victories have been featured on national platforms like Good Morning America and Dateline NBC.

But Lyon’s influence goes beyond the courtroom. He served 10 years in the Texas Senate, where he passed groundbreaking legislation—most notably the seatbelt law, making Texas the first state to mandate seatbelt use, saving thousands of lives.

A Personal Milestone

In a touching moment during his speech, Lyon celebrated his daughter-in-law, Monica Lyon, who received her master’s degree that day. “We’re real proud of her and our family,” he beamed, showcasing the personal connection he holds with the East Texas A&M community.

The Future Starts with a Plan

Lyon encouraged graduates to create 10-year plans and commit to daily steps toward their goals. “Having a plan can transform your life,” he declared. He also spotlighted the Ted and Donna Lyon Center for Gamebird Research—a project born from his long-term vision to protect wildlife, agricultural sustainability, and public health.
