Widow files wrongful death suit against Lyft after bike crash

A Texas man recently lost his life in a motorcycle accident in Austin. Barely one week after the tragedy, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed by the wife of the deceased motorcyclist. She seeks in excess of $1 million in the lawsuit.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff claims her husband was riding a motorcycle when a pickup truck ahead of him suddenly veered off to the left. The reason for the pickup truck swerving turned out to be a Lyft driver who had, allegedly, unexpectedly stopped for passengers. In an effort to avoid hitting the stationary Rideshare car, the bike rider lost control. He smashed into a utility pole after hitting the curb.

According to police, the bike then struck another car that was also stationary with flashing hazard lights. The biker lost his life in the crash. The lawsuit names Lyft — the Rideshare company — as the defendant.

Losing a loved one is naturally a distressing experience, and when such a death is preventable, it becomes exponentially more traumatic. Although nothing can bring back the deceased loved one, the surviving family members have the right to file a wrongful death claim in a Texas civil court if the death was the result of another party’s negligence or misconduct. Documented claims for emotional and financial damages will be adjudicated when financial liability is established. Claims may include the decedent’s pain and suffering in the time leading up to his or her death, medical and/or end-of-life expenses, loss of love and companionship, loss of future earnings, and more.
